As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we reflect on the immense contributions that women have made to our communities, our families, and our world. Women’s History Month is a time to honor the incredible strength, resilience, and leadership that women continue to exhibit in all areas of life. At Compass House, we take this time to recognize not only the achievements of women throughout history but also the outstanding women who are making a difference right here, right now, in our own community.
One such woman is our Executive Director, Lisa Freeman, who has been honored as a 2025 Women in Leadership honoree by the NYS Women Buffalo Niagara Chapter. Lisa’s recognition is a testament to her tireless commitment to youth advocacy, her leadership in the community, and her ongoing efforts to make a lasting impact on the lives of young people in Buffalo.

Lisa Freeman: A Leader in Youth Advocacy and Community Impact
Lisa’s journey in leadership is one marked by dedication, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the power of community. As the Executive Director of Compass House, Lisa has worked relentlessly to ensure that the youth we serve have access to safe spaces, resources, and the support they need to thrive. Under her guidance, Compass House has become a beacon of hope for countless young people experiencing homelessness, offering them not only a place of refuge but also the tools and resources to build better futures.
Her leadership has made a profound impact on Compass House and on the broader community, as she works to build partnerships, advocate for youth, and promote social change. Lisa’s passion for uplifting others and creating opportunities for those who need it most embodies the very essence of what we celebrate during Women’s History Month: the resilience and leadership of women who are transforming their communities for the better.
The Impact of Women at Compass House
While Lisa’s achievements are certainly remarkable, she is by no means alone in her work. Compass House is home to a diverse group of women whose dedication and leadership are integral to the success of our mission. From case managers and youth counselors to volunteers and board members, women at Compass House are at the heart of everything we do.
Our staff members, many of whom are women, bring a wealth of experience, compassion, and expertise to their roles. They work every day to provide a safe and supportive environment for youth facing homelessness, advocating for their needs and ensuring they have the resources to succeed. The work they do is nothing short of inspiring, and it serves as a reminder of the powerful impact that women have on their communities.
These women go above and beyond, not just as employees but as mentors, role models, and advocates. They are teaching the youth we serve that they, too, can overcome obstacles, find their voices, and lead lives full of promise. Whether through one-on-one counseling, life skills workshops, or simply offering a listening ear, the women at Compass House are making a lasting difference every single day.
A Legacy of Empowerment and Change
Women’s History Month is not only about looking back and celebrating the accomplishments of women from history but also about acknowledging the women who are continuing to pave the way for future generations. The women at Compass House are part of this ongoing legacy of empowerment and change. They are showing young people what it means to be strong, resilient, and to stand up for what is right.
By lifting each other up and supporting the youth who need it most, these women are creating ripples of change that will continue to resonate for years to come. Their leadership is helping to shape a future where young women—and all young people—can envision lives filled with hope, opportunity, and success.
