The 15th Annual Richard L. Martin Memorial Golf Classic was held Monday, June 14th at the River Oaks Golf Club. It was a huge success as our golfers turned out for an afternoon of golf on the green, ready to go after last year's tournament had been canceled due to Covid-19.
Each summer, Compass House looks forward to spending a day with many to celebrate a terrific cause- a day of golf dedicated to the special memory of Rick Martin, late Buffalo Sabres player #7. Martin’s legacy has continued along with his dedication and supportive efforts to keep Western New York youth out of crisis. Now more than ever, the estimated 2,000 runaway and homeless youth in Western New York need each and every one of us to prioritize our efforts to help address their unique challenges.
Because of the generous support this year, we were able to raise a little over $19,000.00 to benefit Compass House. We are a non-profit organization that provides shelter, food, clothing, counseling and life skills training for kids, 12 to 24 years old, who have nowhere else to turn. Compass House strives to help these kids be productive members of their schools, families and communities. We are available to runaway, homeless and at-risk youth 24 hours a day, 7 days a week all year-round. All of the services provide are voluntary, free and confidential.
A Few More Details about the Day
We started the day at 11:00 am with lunch and registration, checking in over 25 golf teams. Our volunteers in particular made huge efforts in ensuring that the set-up, registration and the rest of the day went smoothly.
With the motivation of the sunshine, the golfers were ready to go. The Shot Gun Start began at 12:30 and you could see the anticipation and excitement on everyone's face as they drove away to their holes.
Golfers played 18 holes in just under five hours, with incentives if they got a hole in one! Unfortunately, no golfer made a hole in one this year! Some of the prizes were: a 2021 Toyota Prius, a brand-new set of golf clubs, $10,000 cash and a $500.00 Visa Gift Card. There is always next year to make a hole in one!
The River Oaks Golf Club, where we hosted the event, could not have been more amazing than they were. The course was absolutely beautiful.
After everyone got back from playing 18 holes, it was 5:00 pm and time for cocktails. During cocktail hour, everyone was able to place their final ticket entries to the raffle, 50/50 and auction items before dinner began around 6:00 pm.
Lisa Freeman, our Executive Director, gave a speech where she mentioned the wonderful memory of Rick Martin and the success that he has helped bring to Compass House. Dinner was served, winners announced and the night ended on the best note!
